Testing Academy of Colour makeup | Gin & tonic lip balm?!

Hey everyone!

I recently stumbled upon a makeup stand with a brand name that i’d never heard of before. After spotting a £4 eyeshadow quad and a gin and tonic lip balm I figured it would be a cool idea to try them out and put up a post on Beauty Dose!

The brand name is Academy of Colour and is stocked in Debenhams (and weirdly Matalan and Morrisons too?!).

I got 5 items from the nudes 3 collection (spending only £18.50) and aimed to make a bronze glam makeup look, here’s the result:

Find out how I created this look and what I thought of each item below!

Brow palette – £4

I feel like you can’t go wrong with a brow kit but I was impressed by this one. The kit comes with a lighter and darker powder and a dark wax, perfect for my dark hair. I think lighter brunettes might get away with the lighter colour but because it’s so warm toned I think blondes should stay clear.

I used the dark wax and my own brush (didn’t rate the eyebrow brush in the kit at all) and found it pretty easy to get the shape I like. Then I used the darker powder to set that into place.

Update: I’ve worn the brow products all day now and although it’s mainly stayed in place, the edges have faded slightly so the sharp look has completely gone and looked like it may have smudged a little!

Woke up like this eye-shadow palette – £4

The packaging is the strangest part because it’s literally just two foam blocks stuck together at one size. You might want to repot the shadows into your own palettes because I don’t see it lasting too long.

The shadows themselves are a regular size and the colours are what I’d go for a basic warm tone look. They did have a bit of kickback but I didn’t really mind as it didn’t budge on the eye when blending.

As you can see the colours are surprising really pigmented and so effortless to blend! I used the pale colour to set my concealer, the light brown for my transition colour and the dark orangey brown in the crease. Finished off with the shimmery purple on my lid.

The palette is definitely my favourite from the nudes 3 collection and something I’d find myself reaching for in the future!

Update: After wearing the eyeshadows all day (which has been really hot) the colours haven’t budged or faded at all!

Metallic eye pigment and eyeliner – £4

I felt what was missing was a highlight shade in this collection so I picked up the gold shimmer pigment to try to use it as a multi-function item. Initially I tried to add some gold on top of the shade on my lid for a pop of colour but it literally just fell straight off my face – need to try it out with glitter glue!

In the end I packed some on an eyeshadow brush, sprayed with some setting spray and added it to the inner corners. I did this again with a bigger brush and used it as a highlighter on my cheekbones and nose which turned out okay.

The gold liner was a good base for putting the pigment on top of, but lacked pigment on top of other colours. I ended up using it to line my waterline which didn’t really show up on camera but in person did give a slight hue of shimmer.

Gin and tonic lip balm – £2.50

As I’m using a matte liquid lipstick I felt some lip balm was needed. The first item I found that caught my eye in this collection was the gin and tonic lip balm.

The gin and tonic lip balm was the first item to catch my eye in the collection – you know were all obsessed with gin at the minute! – and I was really curious to what it would be like.

Disappointment.

There is no scent of gin OR tonic at all, all I smell is bubblegum so I feel like this was just a cheap shot at jumping on the gin bandwagon. The actual balm isn’t anything to shout about either as it’s so solid it’s hard to get any out and on to your finger.

Matte lip kit – £4

The lip kit was the product I really didn’t get along with. First off, the lipstick colour weren’t remotely similar.. and not in an ombré kind of way. The liner was a pinky muave and the lipstick was a warm toned orangey-brown and just looked really strange together. Not only that but after half an hour there was literally 0 product left on my lips, despite the drying formula. Definitely would recommend the MUR lip kits which are similar in price and 10x better quality.

Tips To Fake Tan At Home | Ft. Bondisands

Hey everyone!

IMG_2272

The temperature is rising here in England but so is the pollen count! I always find sitting in the sun to be a nightmare because my hay-fever gets so bad (or I just get really bored) so that’s why I rely on fake tanning so my skin has that bronzed summer glow. If you don’t have time – or just don’t want to – sit in the sun and get a natural tan, fake tan is your best bet!

Sometimes application can be tricky but if the right steps are taken, then you can fast get the look you want to achieve. Today I’m sharing just a few tips that I’ve experienced work first hand.

IMG_2159

Prepare your skin

Make sure skin is clean and moisturised before applying fake tan!

Exfoliating the dead skin off before you go in with a razor means you’ll get a closer shave and feel 10x more smoother. I’d recommend shaving a day before tan application, This way your skin won’t be too sensitised and reactive to the tanning formulation and also so you don’t end up with little brown spots where tan has gathered around hair follicles!

Rinse off with cold water and then moisturise and you’re skin will be fully prepped for application.

Face Tanning

IMG_1179_Facetune_30-04-2018-16-24-29

I’ve never been one to fake tan my face so I usually just skip that part. I find that with washing and exfoliating my face each day as well as constantly removing makeup that it’s just destined to be a big patchy mess!

Some tan formulas can contain harsh chemicals that can cause breakouts and clogged pores, so avoid if you have sensitive skin.

Instead I leave my face bare and use a foundation shade which is dark enough to match the tan on my neck and chest area – my go to is the Revolution Foundation Stick in F5 or the Maybelline Superstay 24hr Foundation in Nude Beige if i need more coverage. Both of the drugstore foundations are relatively cheap – especially Makeup Revs which is £5!! – so I don’t mind stocking up extra shades depending on how dark I want my tan.

However, if you are wanting a natural tan on your face when wearing no makeup then use a separate product designed for the face. I’d recommend the Garnier self tan face mist which leaves a natural glow on your skin. It also helps to rub an ice cube over your face before application to make sure them pores are closed.

Choose the right tan

IMG_2136

A lot of people steer clear from self tanning to avoid the ‘fake bake’ orange streaks we see online. Choosing the right tan formula can make or break your end result so it’s important to do your research.

My current favourite tan formula is by Bondi Sands, which is green based to counteract any orange tint and develop into a natural dark tan. For ease, I use the 1-hour express tan, but if I want it really dark then I will leave it on overnight. Other tried and tested tanning brands are Skinny Tan, Loving Tan and Isle of Paradise.

If you have a naturally pale skin tone, don’t go for the darkest shade! First try out a lighter/medium shade and see how that looks before you go darker and end up looking like an oompa-loompa..

Layering

IMG_2139_Facetune_26-06-2018-15-00-29

If you’re wanting to achieve a darker look opt for light layering over piling the stuff on.

Put one layer of tan on, wait 30 to 40 minutes and then put a second layer on and if you like, do the same with a third layer. This method prevents buildup and the result will be a smooth and even tan that doesn’t look patchy in areas.

However, try to avoid layering tan on top of old tan.. your 7 day old tan may be fading and be getting slightly textured as it comes off, so layering more tan on top if just going to highlight these areas even more and look a hot mess.

Just like you wouldn’t layer foundation over what the layer you have had on all day!

Cold Showers

There’s nothing worse than waiting for 6+ hours and then watching all the tan wash down the drain! Make sure you are showering using cold (or luke-warm) water – especially during the initial rinse off to ensure all the tan stays on your skin.

Hot water is opening all the pores on your body and gives a deeper cleanse, meaning all the stain if being washed away and you’re time has been wasted. Showering with cold water will keep them pores closed and leave the stain on your skin for longer.

IMG_1356_Facetune_07-05-2018-23-41-01

Tricky bits

Elbows, knees and the heels of your foot can be a patchy, dry nightmare when you’re tanning! Make the look a little more subtle by mixing a small amount of moisturiser in with an even smaller amount of tan and rubbing it in these areas for a seamless finish!

As for your hands and feet, leave them parts until last and quickly wipe whatever is left over on your mitt over these areas – not forgetting in between your fingers and the sides of your hands!

If you have short arms like me you may struggle to reach your back! Grab somebody else to do it for you or invest in a nifty little back applicator to give you a helping hand.

Attending My First Blogger Event: What I learnt

Even when I was just starting Beauty Dose, the thought of attending a blogger event was so exciting!

Despite this, I’ve always been the type to stay firmly in my comfort zone and that held me back on more than one occasion.

Last week, I decided to break the cycle of hiding behind my computer screen and head on over to the Black Olive blogging event in Yarm.

I know other bloggers will have this problem too, so I thought it would be a great idea to write about my experience and tell you what I learnt – so maybe you will try it out too.

After I talk briefly about the event, I have listed a few of the things I learnt from the experience that may be helpful to you!

Black Olive Blogger Event: My experience

I turned up with my two friends, Lucy and Curtis (who runs The Pop Geek) and were greeted with smiling faces and trays of prosecco.

The atmosphere was really lively with lots of people chatting  and waiters circling the place with huge trays of appetisers from mini fish cakes to bruschetta.

We all had a chance to mingle as everyone piled in and I got a good look at the swanky bar which was beautiful and decorated with fairy lights.

After about half an hour, we all sat down and watched a series of presentations from local marketing agency Viral Effect, web designers Eighty 8 and other various bloggers. At this point I was finding tips on how to use WordPress and how to market my blog – overall it was really helpful!

After the talks were over and I’d been giving copious amounts of porn-star martini and Jäger  bombs, live music was played as we got more chance to mingle with everyone!

I ended up leaving around 9:30pm and was gifted a goody bag on my way out!

What I got in my goody bag

If you follow me on Instagram or like my Facebook page, you will have seen my snap of the goody bag I received!

  • A 200ml bottle of Familga Zonin Prosecco
  • A £20 Black Olive gift card
  • A voucher for one large pizza at Dominoes (what I was most excited for)
  • A Psyche loyalty card
  • A Psyche pen

This was the cutest thing ever and super generous – so thank you so much to Black Olive and all the organisers behind the event!

What I learnt:

1. Stop worrying about your outfit!

The whole week leading up to the event I was worrying about my outfit. Silly I know, but us girls are like that sometimes and I really wanted to make a good first impression!

My first task was trying to determine if it was a more professional or dressy event, so I tried to mix them both with Boohoo white blouse and blue jeans.

Can’t go wrong with a jeans and a nice top combo! To dress it up a little bit more I paired with Next heels and some Pat Butcher-esque gold earrings.

When I got there, there were people in party dresses, and people in jeans and a t-shirt – I quickly realised that there wasn’t a dress code! Next time my outfit choice definitely won’t be a huge worry for me!

2. People really like alcohol

I won’t lie – I’m one of these people.

All night we were taken care off by a fab team of waiters, always getting top ups on our prosecco if our glass was empty and offered more drinks! Being 5ft1, it was probably wasn’t smart of me to say yes every time I got offered a drink, but who can say no to a free cocktail?

I felt like this made the atmosphere so much more relaxed and really did help me loosen up a bit!

Of course, there were other non-alcoholic drinks available if we preferred.

3. You don’t have to be a pro

One of the biggest reasons I haven’t attended a blogger event yet – despite confidence – is that I didn’t feel like my blog was big enough. I would constantly tell myself: “When I reach x followers” or “When I’ve been blogging for x years” that THEN I would go. Looking back now, I know how stupid that is – these events are for literally everyone!

The presentations I listened to were so helpful, and a lot of it was catered to people who’d just started out and needed a bit more technical help. There was even information on how to create your blog – so even if you haven’t started yet, you can still benefit!

I learnt so much from WordPress packages to what kit to use, that I have a new found confidence in what I plan to do with my blog in the future.

4. It wasn’t as scary as I imagined it would be!

Don’t let your mind be your worst enemy

I did for a long time, and it’s only ever held me back from great opportunities. These kind of events can seem really intimidating, I know. But, after attending this one, I cannot wait for the next!

First walking into the room, I was crazy with nerves, but after greeting all the lovely faces (and downing a couple martinis) I really loosened up and enjoyed myself.

Put yourself out there and say yes to as many opportunities as you can and you will be so much happier for it.

This Beauty Line is Supporting Women In Domestic Violence | Ft. Eyewake

Hey guys!
It’s so amazing seeing beauty brands stand up for a real cause, and I was excited be approached by a member of the Eyewake team to spread the word!
A few weeks back, Eyewake kindly gifted me with the Collagen Eye Gel mask, and after testing it out and learning more about their campaign, I’m ready to make a blog post!
Disclaimer: Although this item was gifted, this post is not sponsored – all views are truthful and my own!

Once I found out about Eyewake’s campaign and partnership with Women’s Aid, I jumped at the chance to write this blog post. For every bottle of Collagen Eye Gel, a donation will be made to help victims of domestic violence!
Last year, 113 women were killed by men in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Women’s Aid have been at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic abuse for over 40 years.
By empowering women who have been affected by domestic abuse, listening to their experiences and working in partnership with other domestic abuse services, we aim to build a society in which domestic abuse is no longer tolerated.

Eyewake Collagen Gel Eye Mask

Note: I’ve put the ingredient list at the end of this post for those interested!

I’ve been using this product for just under two months and I can honestly say I have seen some benefits!

Being a dry skin girl (find out your skin type here) and having 2 dark circles as evidence of my enrolment at university, I welcome an eye care product with open arms.

Eyewake make some bold claims about their eye mask – here are my thoughts!

Reduce Dark Circles And Puffiness

Eyewake combines cucumber and elderflower that claims to awaken and soothe your under eye area.

yes yes and yes. One thing I have noticed previously about my eyes is the puffiness – especially in the morning! The first thing I noticed after a few weeks of using this was the puffiness around my eyes reduced – dramatically.

My dark circles still appear – most likely due to the late night in the library and excessive coffee drinking – but are much better due to this daily treat.

Not just for eyes!

This gel also contains Vitamin-E which is a strong antioxidant perfect for moisturising the skin and boosting your skin’s vitiliaty.

  • Moisturising to the entire face – As I’ve said before, this cooling gel absorbs straight into my skin and feels amazing afterwards!
  • Anti-aging – I’d like to think as a 20 year old with a baby face that I have a few years left before I have to worry about anti ageing benefits! I can’t vouch for this one particularly but looking at Amazon reviews – it doesn’t look too bad!
  • Base and primer for makeup  – I’m not a huge primer user to start with, but this product deeply moisturises my skin and my foundation lays so smoothly on top! If you’re a primer buff, I’d recommend you giving it a try and avoiding spending the $$$ on a high end product!

Made From A Trusted Source

Eyewake skincare products are never tested on animals and are completely cruelty free!

This product also contains no alcohol and is suitable for all skin types.

Glossybox Unboxing: March 2018 | Beauty Dose

I can’t believe it’s been a month since I last posted – apologies for that! Im currently coming to the end of my final year at university and the last few weeks have been pretty intense.

However, my Glossybox has arrived and I had to post about it!

If you have read my blog in the past you may know that I was a subscriber of Birchbox, but Glossybox honestly just seemed like the better option so I made the switch!  (Days before Birchbox announced they had Bad Girl Bang in this months box – just my luck)

Anyway, this month’s edit marked the start of spring – and is absolutely beautiful

March 2018 edit

“Out with the old and in with the new. Hibernation is over, so let’s all blossom and bloom as Spring awakens!

We promise to shake up your beauty routine and give you a spring in your step! It’s time to refresh and revive…”

~ Your Glossybox Team x

This month’s packaging design was a simple and bright mix of pink, white and black. I almost didn’t want to unwrap it because it was so pretty! As you can tell, I had a lot of fun taking pictures of it…

Inside, I got 5 full size products claiming to be featuring “a magical recipe for beauty sleep and a skin perfecting serum”

MUDMASKY | Sleep Repair Renewal Nourishing Mask

According to Glossybox, this mask uses only fresh, raw, all-natural ingredients to hydrate, soothe and smoothe your skin.

I was expecting this product to be like any mud mask – thick and opaque – but actually it was a clear gel?!

According to the instructions, you put this mask on before bed and rinse it off in the morning, perfect if you don’t have time for a full on pamper session

I haven’t had chance to wear this overnight yet but I did wear it for the stated minimum of 5 hours, rinsed it off with warm water and my skin felt amazing!

ORYZA BEAUTY | Warm Nude Lipstick

These ORYZA lipticks RRP for £15.95 each so I was quite impressed that it was in my £10 Glossybox!

This one in particular is in the Velvet Ribbon lipstick range – velvety being the perfect word to describe how it feels on the lip!

Although I love the formula, the colour is a bit too warm/orangey for my skin tone, but paired with a brown or nude/pink lip liner, I can easily make it work.

Have a look at my top lipstick picks here

FIGS & ROUGE | Soft Focus Pore Perfect HD+

This stuff is so hjkjhjk good.

The Soft Focus Pore Perfect is a “weightless, matte serum designed to minimise the appearance of pores.”

I have naturally dry skin (find out your skin type here) so I didn’t have high hopes for this one, but it is amazing as a primer!

It comes out the tube quite watery but dries down quickly leaving a tacky base for your foundation – keeping it truly in place all day.

CAUDALIE VINOSOURCE | Moisturising Sorbet Cream

As I said earlier, I have dry skin so I’m always  happy to see a moisturiser!

There isn’t much I can say about this one as I found it a standard thick moisturiser – I find that with products like these I need to test them for a longer period of time to have a full opinion.

UNIVERSAL BEAUTY | Secret Flush

My favourite product this month! I usually reach for a bronzer rather than blush, but as we get into the warmer season I’ve been feeling it.

This was the product that I felt the Valentines edit was missing last month, so I was really keen to try it out. The fact that it can be used as a cheek and lip stain is another plus!

This product truly “glides on like silk” and takes no effort to blend, perfect whether you want a bold or more subtle look. It also has a slight shimmer, and leaves a lovely glow on your cheeks. Dreamy.

That’s what I got this month! If you subscribe to Glossybox, what did you get? Let me know in the comments…

How To Slay Valentines Day Makeup On A Budget |Drugstore + Full Coverage Makeup Look

LastShareCollage

Valentines day is just around the corner, so if you want to find some easily accessible cosmetics for your valentines makeup look then this post is for you! All the products used to create this look are all from the drugstore to save you some pennies.

This is part two of my valentines posts, In my last post I showed you some of my Valentines clothing picks, from a night on the town to a takeaway in-front the TV – check it out here

A full list of products used with links and prices is at the bottom of this post!

IMG_4070_Facetune_08-02-2018-18-45-15

My first step was to sort my non existent brows out! I always do this first so I have it marked out where to place my eye shadow and how far to blend it out. Today I tried out the Collection Brow Pomade for the first time, and to be totally honest I didn’t really like this! It was a little oily and because of that it lacked pigment – i’d recommend the Makeup Revolution one instead! Regardless I went over with a brown eye-shadow and they turned out fine.

IMG_4131_Facetune_12-02-2018-12-35-58

As soon as I thought of Valentines I thought of this palette. The ColourPop Hi-Maintenance palette is one of my holy grails and they’re sooo cheap they had to make it in this post. I used a transition colour (light warm brown) from another palette, then used the pink to build up colour in my crease and began to blend it up and out further to create a smokey look. I then took the darkest colour (a darker pink with a slight purple hue) on a more defined brush and deepened up the outer corner and crease.

Now for the star of the show! This Max Factor Colour Precision Highlighter is the most gorgeous shimmery pink colour – looking back, I could have used this as a liquid highlighter too! I carved out my eyelid using some concealer and a precise brush, and then patted on the rose gold colour from the ColourPop palette. Then I coated the entire rose gold section of my eye with the liquid eyeshadow for a blinding pink shimmer.

I felt like this eye-shadow look was too dramatic to not have a winged eyeliner and lashes! For eyeliner I used the New Look Flick Dip Eyeliner and then coated my lashes with the Soap & Glory Thick & Fast mascara.

IMG_4073_Facetune_08-02-2018-18-40-42

Eylure lashes are my favourite and super accessible in most drugstores. These pair have fast became my go to, if you love a wispy and textured lash, these are for you!

IMG_4072_Facetune_08-02-2018-18-48-36

Eyes are done and now it’s time to start on your base! I quickly primed using the NYX Angel Veil and then slapped on the Maybelline 24hr Foundation. Another first impression from this product, but I can definitely say it is suuuuper full coverage and lasts all day!

I concealed using the new cult favourite MUR Conceal and Define (dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape and only £4!) to brighten up my under eyes and used a darker shade to contour with. (I didn’t have a powder bronzer from the drugstore to show in this post – sorry! – but just for reference, I used the Too Faced Sweetheart Bronzer in Sweet Tea).

IMG_4122_Facetune_08-02-2018-18-14-01

I powdered my entire face using the Collection Lasting Perfection powder – which was a HUGE bargain for £3.99, it even comes with a compact case holding a mirror and sponge (also became a place where I store my lashes!).

IMG_4094_Facetune_08-02-2018-18-01-17

I set my face with the NYX Dewy Finish setting spray before highlighter, to make it pop even more. NYX also do this setting spray in a matte finish if that’s what you prefer! For highlighter I used my all time favourite from ColourPop in shade Flexitarian.

Last but not least! I used everyday liquid lipstick from MUR in shade Bow Down. This lipstick actually comes in a kit with a lip-liner just like the Kylie Lip Kits, and is a great dupe!
